Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan has said that the investigation into the fatal shooting of Det Garda Adrian Donohoe is making “steady progress”.

The Commissioner was speaking at a specially convened press conference held at the Garda Barracks in Dundalk today (Friday).

Commissioner Callinan said that the investigation team are being extremely thorough and that the level of detail in the case was remarkable.

“I’ve been given a thorough tour of the investigation, and I’ve been extremely impressed at the level of detail that the investigation team has gone into.”

The Commissioner said that over 360 statements had given to the Gardaí on the matter, as many as 1125 lines of inquiry are being investigated, that there are over 300 exhibits relating to the case and there are140 separate CCTV films that are being examined.

Responding to questions Commissioner Callinan admitted that the “progress in the case was steady but slow,” but that progress was being made.

He praised the efforts of the PSNI , saying that the level of cooperation between the two police forces was exemplary.

He also heaped praise on the the people of Dundalk. “There has been a great local response to this vile act. I would also like to thank the wider public for their response...The people of Dundalk were also extremely welcoming to many Gardaí from across the State. ”

He also offered a fresh plea for information in the case, saying the “There are still people out there who know what happened, and that while the pepertrators will be brought to justice, that process can be sped up.”

He said that he could not go into the detail about the group of people who the Gardaí believe to be responsible for Detective Donohoe’s murder, but that they were under no illusion as to the cold blooded nature of the group.
