New exhibition ‘Citizen’ opens this week
Citizen is a new, unique exhibition and installation by artist Anthony Haughey, who lives in Dundalk and is also a lecturer in the Dublin Institute of Technology,
The exhibition is a cross-border collaboration between the artist, Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda and Millennium Court Arts Centre, Portadown.
Through a series of long-term encounters, and in many cases close personal relationships Haughey and a growing collective of migrants from all over the world have collaborated to produce video installations, photographs, texts and performances.
These transformative actions set out to dispel myths and reductive stereotyping surrounding transnational migration. Instead, migrants reclaim their agency and participate as active ‘informal citizens’.
Borders and transnational migration has been a major theme of Haughey’s art practice for more than twenty-years.
Although his work has encompassed a wide range of subjects, he has continually returned to this on-going investigation of what Saskia Sassen describes as ‘informal citizenship’, where migrants contest the right to move freely across borders in search of a better life.
Commenting on the exhibition, Aoife Ruane said,
“Haughey’s exhibition with Highlanes Gallery and MCAC is particularly timely.
“According to results released by the CSO, one-in-ten of those living in Louth are foreign-nationals, with Polish nationals making up the largest group of people who were born outside Ireland.
“I expect that Citizen will engage and provoke discussion around the subject of migration, both in to and out of the country, especially given Louth’s unique position as a border county.”
Citizen will in the Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda from February 8 until April 6 2013.
