Following the successful launch of the Echos of Dundalk Photographic Project, Dundalk Tidy Towns Committee in association with the Louth Arts Office and the Town Council have this week launched another significant project - Outdoor Art Gallery on the streets of Dundalk.

The project which was recently given the green light involves the display of an Artists work on banners attached to poles at the junction of Earl St. Francis Street and Park Street. Mr. Willie Duffy, of the Tidy T own Committee stated that “This project has a three fold ambition Firstly, to provide a venue for Artists to display free of charge their works in a high profile accessible location in the town centre and secondly, to encourage visitors and local people to visit the town centre generating footfall for business and activity around the recently redeveloped Market Square, finally, this project will expand on the already developed links between Dundalk Tidy Towns Committee, local Schools Colleges and Dundalk Institute Technology through the holding of art competitions with winners having their works displayed on the banners”.

The first artist to have his work displayed is local man Mr. Marty Garland who said “I’m delighted and honoured to be involved in this project. The banners are a great

innovation from Dundalk Tidy Towns and it gives artists like myself an excellent opportunity to exhibit their work to a broad range of people, it enhances our local community and it’s an item of interest for visitors to the area”.

It is envisaged that Marty’s work will remain on display for a period of three months and discussions have already commenced on the second installation by another local Artist. Preference will be given to the display of work by local Artists, however, the Committee will readily accept work from Artists outside of the area.

The Artist is required to present their work in digital format. The selected images are then printed on a banner, two per banner, these then become the property of Dundalk Tidy Towns Committee for use as required.

Speaking at the launch Louth Local Authorities Arts Officer Mr. Brian Harten commented “Any initiative that highlights artistic endeavour and in particular the works of local artists is to be welcomed and I fully endorse this project. The Tidy Towns Committee is to be congratulated on this project”.
