THE organist at St Patrick’s Cathedral was presented with a St Patrick’s Medal by Cardinal Sean Brady in recognition of his 25 years service to the church.
The St Patrick’s Medal was presented by the Archbishop of Armagh to Brendan from St Alphonsus Road during the 11.30am mass in St Patrick’s on Sunday, January 29.
It was presented to Brendan for his “outstanding committment” and dedicated service to St Patrick’s and its congregation over the past 25 years.
“The congregation was surprised and wondered why the Cardinal was there until he announced that he would be presenting me with a medal after the Gospel,” said Brendan.
“The congregation, most of whom would be regular attendees at the 11.30am mass, gave a heartfelt standing ovation as I returned to the gallery.”
He added: “The choir members kept the whole thing secret until the last practice. They are a beautiful, lovely group of people to work with all of the time.
“They have a great sense of commitment. I am also very lucky because I get to play the famous Willis organ which is 111 years old and is in great condition.”
Before joining St Patrick’s Brendan served as an organist in The Redemptorist for 13 years, and was a choir boy and choir leader there for ten years.
He recently completed a Diploma in Arts in Church Music.
