"Edge of Darkness" is based on the BBC television series from over 20 years ago. The original, you may remember, starred Bob Peck and was directed by Martin Campbell.
This Hollywood remake has Mel Gibson in the Bob Peck role but the director remains the same.
And so we have a six-part mini-series condensed into a two hour movie and given the Hollywood treatment.
What emerges is an entertaining movie that, for obvious reasons, never quite hits the marks made by the original series.
Mel Gibson, in his first lead role in eight years, plays a middle-aged cop called Craven who sees his daughter gunned down by an unknown assailant.
Craven assumes that the bullet was meant for him but after he starts to investigate his daughter's life he discovers that she was investigating various goings-on at a nuclear power facility.
So far so like the original series. However, way back in 1985 nuclear power was deemed far more sinister and dangerous than it is nowadays.
"Edge of Darkness" is another in a long line of films where Mel Gibson exacts revenge for some wrongdoing or other (c.f. "Ransom", "Payaback", "Lethal Weapon II" and so on).
Having said that, this is the sort of thing that Gibson does well and it's good to see him in front of the camera after his recent, ahem, hiatus.
Campbell, whose previous films include "Casino Royale", "The Mask of Zorro" and "Goldeneye" directs with aplomb.
It's a zippy enough little thriller and manages to maintain the interest for most of its running time.
