Sludge finds sky rocket

SINCE the new year as many as twelve toxic sludge dumps have occured in Couth Louth according to figures from the Louth County Council.

The most high profile recent find was on the M1 the week before last, but there have been a number of smaller dumpings since which suggest that illegal diesel laundering is more prevalent in the border region then ever before.

This dump is the latest such find in what is a problem that has spiralled to unprecendented levels.

Astonishingly, the rate of dumping in 2011 has risen by a massive 3600 per cent in the space of just two years.

In 2009 27 tonnes were found in Louth, while in 2010 that rose to 220 tonnes, while last year a staggering 989 tonnes were dumped.

In a statement on the matter Louth County Council have said: “Expenditure by Louth County Council in the first thirteen days of the New Year in dealing with this issue now stands at approx €70,000.

“The Local Authority welcomes reports from local residents and road users in reporting sighting of such materials dumped and would encourage the general public to report any suspicious activities around material to the Gardai.”

The finds so far this year include: on 1 January North of Major’s Hollow Roundabout on Old N1 (R132); on 4 January, at Doylesfrot Road; on 4 January, 1 km from mast on Black Mountain on LT70472 from Carrickdale Hotel; on 5 January, Field off LS7103 in Carnmore, Dundalk; on 6 January, on R177 past Kilcurry but south of Drumbilla Crossroads (near border); on 9 January, Tully, Corcreaghy on LS 5152; trailer on lay by between junction 19 and 20 on North bound carriage way of M1; on 12 January, trailer at Rices bridge on R178 Carrick road;

On the 13 January at Faughart; on the LP3095 between Ballymascanlon Hotel and Thistle Cross (leaking); on LS7111 at Tateetra on LHS just after passing beneath Motorway bridge; and at Old Newry road at New Inn at entrance to Warehouses (leaking).
