Sharkey slams Garda inaction
Toxic sludge
LOUTH County Councillor Tomas Sharkey has told the Democrat that he is concerned not enough forensic investigation is being done to catch diesel laundering criminals.
His comments come after he happened upon two dumped IBC containers in the Coffin Bridge area.
“I was visiting some family graves in the area and came upon these two cubes. I immediately informed the county council environment department. It seems to me that they had just be kicked off the back of a trailer as they were on their side. They were brand new cubes which makes me think that criminals are buying these cubes fresh.”
The Sinn Fein councillor is concerned that not enough forensic investigation is being done by the Gardaí or authorities into tracking the culprits down.
“I have never seen any forensic investigation into these dump sites by the Gardaí. If criminals are ultimately getting these containers from legitimate businesses who are done with them or even buying them brand new, surely they can be tracked.
“The same goes for the trailers, if you can idenitify where the trailer originally came from surely you track down who is buying them.”
Illegal toxic sludge, the product of fuel laundering, has sky rocketed in the last year.
“I don’t know what the Gardaí are doing about it. These operations are massive now, judging by the amount of toxic sludge that is being dumped. Cllr Peter Savage told the meeting of the county council last week that he believes as much as 30 per cent of fuel being used in the region has been laundered.
“Surely these sites can be found. They are not tiny little poitin making operations in the back of someones kitchen. They are huge operations,” concluded Cllr Sharkey.
