“Big hoo-ha” over nothing
ARDEE beef and cereal farmer Raymond O’Malley says that the coverage of a court case regarding outstanding election costs owed to him by Declan Ganley was a “big hoo-ha” over nothing.
Mr Ganley agreed to pay the European Election expenses of the Ardee based farmer Raymond O’Malley who failed to get elected, a court heard this week. Ganley, of Moyne Park, Moyne, Abbeyknockmoy, Tuam, Co Galway, had been sued by O’Malley in the Circuit Civil Court for €35,366. He claimed Ganley had agreed to pay his expenses if he became a Libertas party candidate in the 2009 Euro elections.
Speaking to the Dundalk Democrat Mr O’Malley, a former Vice President of the IFA, told the paper that the case had been “amicably” settled.
“This whole case was sensationalised because it involved Declan Ganley. It was just a big misunderstanding.
“It’s been wrongly reported up until now.”
O’Malley, a former executive member of the Irish Farmers Association, polled 18,557 first preference votes in the East Leinster constituency and was eliminated on the third count with 19,396 votes.
The court this week heard that it had been agreed between the parties that the settlement figure would be paid in two payments between now and the end of February together with an agreed sum towards Mr O’Malley’s legal costs.
O’Malley says that while he hasn’t completely shut the door on politics, he was more concerned with his passion, ie farming.
“I’m investing my time and effort into beef and cereal production. I breed Simmental cattle and have a passion for it. That’s what I’m concerned with.”
Mr O’Malley also said that he didn’t believe that Irish public were ready for a party like Libertas.
“The people of this country have been sold down the river by the presiding administrations, yet they are clearly not ready to accept the truth. They are not prepared for to do something about it yet. We have been sold pups by the political elite and we have swallowed it hook, line and sinker.
“Libertas were portrayed by the media as an anti-European party, which couldn’t be further from the truth. We were a pro-European party, but we portrayed as anti-European as we wanted to improve how Europe works,” concluded Mr O’Malley.
