THE people of Dundalk and Greenore are proud of their railway engineering history and with the collaboration of like-minded dedicated railway enthusiasts the Dundalk Newry & Greenore Railway is once again running on the tracks if only as a model railway.

Dundalk Quay Street Station, St Gerard’s Square and the quays area of the town have been re-constructed in miniature format and are on display at the Greenore Co-operative building at Euston Street Greenore.

This model railway was built by a group of men from Greenore and engineering lecturers at DkIT.

Some of the people involved actually worked on the Dundalk Greenore and Newry Railway which closed on New Year’s Eve 1951.

Next Monday 18 March everyone will have a chance to come along and visit this model railway exhibition.

There will also be a presentation on emigration through Greenore Port prior to the railway closure.

The exhibition will be open between 11.30am and 4pm. All are welcome.

Greenore village was built by the London and North Western Railway company (L&NWR) as a railway terminal and ferry port.

It was officially opened for public traffic by Lord Lieutenant of Ireland Earl Spencer on April the 30th 1873.
